Yellow jackets tend to construct their nests in dark, secluded areas, such as crevices in the sidewalks, at the foot of trees, and beneath clumps of grass in open areas. They're one of the most sociable wasp species, and may live in colonies with tens of thousands of individuals. Due to this, and their black and yellow or black and white coloration, they're sometimes mistaken for bees.
